Rewind two years and many of the Dialtone Digital line up are yet to meet, occupied in their various paths in and around Bristol. Through word of mouth, Soundcloud and a seemingly natural gravitation towards collaborating with like-minded individuals, Tony EQ, Slimbroke, Casso Clay, Thieta, Prince Lucas and O’Malley then found themselves in Tony EQ’s infamous DIY bedroom studio (pictured).

It was during this time spent together, making music, sharing ideas and generally just having a laugh that Tony EQ and Slimbroke realised that the guys were making music that wasn’t necessarily similar-sounding, but felt inter-connected. They came from a similar place in British society and had a shared understanding of the world, so naturally their music seemed to fit together. niIt was through this shared world-view that Dialtone Digital was born. A quick listen to their Soundcloud and this is increasingly apparent. Each artist seems to have carved out their own unique sound whilst staying relevant under the Dialtone brand. Each collaboration inherently brings together different sounds and it works effortlessly (Tour de France and Zest are personal favourites.). From Prince Lucas’ melody meets mumble sharp flows to Thieta’s lo-fi hip hop vibe; the group are truly diverse in what they have to offer, with Slimbroke’s mastery in production to back them up. If Brockhampton are known as ‘the internet’s first hip hop group’, perhaps Dialtone is ‘the internet’s first record label’. If not, they’re still a glowed-up group of mates making bangers and pushing their artisitic vision.

Fast-forward to 2018 and the collective have started releasing music under the Dialtone Digital record label and have just released a crisp music video ahead of a bag of releases planned for the year ahead. Aside from the vision of the founders, what remains refreshingly apparent about DT is that they remain a group of mates who are just having fun making music; I implore you to listen to their Soundcloud playlist and find a tune you don’t like. The group also goes further than music, as the full Dialtone family consist of a number of film-makers and graphic designers as well. Their first music video, “In my Blood”, is directed by Rex Russell, son of legendary British film-maker Ken Russell. If you check what they’ve done in just two years, it’s hard not to excited for the near future to see what they’ll bring to the British music scene.

If you’d like to experience Dialtone’s energy and vibe in person, go and check their night at the Sebright Arms on Good (“Unholy”) Friday (March 30th) for a night of bedroom pop and lo-fi soul. Having been to their last night, expect good vibes, good tunes and, at the very least a little, bit of hype.
