Ronan McKenzie's second exhibition - I'm Home, is an exploration of Black Femininity, the exhibition features her own work alongside that of Rhea Dillon, Liz Johnson-Arthur & Joy Gregory. 'I'm Home' explores the differing experience of Black females, but frames this experience in a familiar setting, a setting we've all experienced - Home. Alongside the displayed artworks, 'I'm Home' will host a supper cub in collaboration with Black in the Day , Life drawing sessions with Our Naked Truth and the 'I'm Home' Library curated by Rianna Jade Parker, Check out our interview with Ronan below, and be sure to check out the exhibition before it's gone!

BB: What was your inspiration behind hosting this exhibition?

RM: One of my main aims was to create a space that contextualised the work of black artists, for them, although the show is a thoughtful curation of black British female artists, I wanted the works to explore a topic that is arguably more binding than race and gender, and something that everyone can relate to; home and family.

BB: What does home mean to you?

RM: Home is the smell of my mum’s neck, and thyme wafting through the hallways. It’s the feeling of laughing so hard that you can’t breathe and your eyes start streaming with tears.

BB: we heard about your £5 booking fee that goes to charity, we love this idea! How did the partnership with Hackney Quest come about?

RM: I'm from Walthamstow, my dad grew up in, and mum lived in Hackney for many years which is currently where I live, so it is super important to me that I include and support the local community that I live in.

As the exhibition theme is on home and family, I chose Hackney Quest because they are an incredible independent charity who support young people and families in and around the Hackney area. They facilitate a range of positive opportunities across various projects including their Positive Youth Engagement Programme, Education Support Service, The Family Support and Community Volunteer Project and their Adult and Youth Volunteering and Entrepreneur project

BB: What do you hope to achieve through I’m Home?

RM: I'M HOME is a completely self funded project and show, not only because it's very difficult to get funding for a project like this - where I had no idea what my exact budget would be before I began confirming spaces/events/etc. - but because I wanted to take ownership over it. I have worked so hard to make it a show that I would love to attend and be part of, so I really hope that other people feel the same and come down to the opening, book places to come to events, join in with the discussions, and just hang out and be open to meeting new people within the space.

I'm very interested to hear feedback during and afterwards to what people did take away from the show, because I think, like the concept of home, I'M HOME is a show that is open for interpretation.

BB: And lastly, where can we find it, and how long is it on for?
