INC. MGMT is a modelling agency created to celebrate inclusivity and put diversity first. Set up in London by partners Kirby and Nas, INC. MGMT aims to fill a genuine gap in the fashion industry, by truly representing and shining a light on different skin tones, heights, body shapes and experiences INC. MGMT hopes to demonstrate that inclusivity and diversity are more than just passing trends in fashion. We caught up with founders Kirby and Nas to discuss why they set up the agency, who's on their roster and what they hope to achieve.

BB: Tell us a bit about yourselves, how did you two come to meet and work together?

Kirby: With Nas and I firstly being a couple, we came up with the idea for INC after having a conversation about wanting to work for ourselves. The idea of a modelling agency came up naturally and from there we wanted to use the agency to create a platform that benefits our communities and challenges advertising and the fashion

industry in the process.

BB: What is INC. MGMT?

Kirby: INC.MGMT which is an abbreviation for inclusive. management is a London based modelling agency focussed on representing POC and LGBT+ identifying individuals.

BB: Can you tell us a bit about some of the talent on your roster?

Kirby & Nas: When we were in the process of selecting the initial models for INC, we wanted to truly represent the diverse and talented people that surround us from our communities while celebrating how sexuality, gender, ethnicity and experiences manifest uniquely through individual expression. With this in mind, we reached out to some of the beautiful people you can see on our roster such as Kayla an experienced makeup artist, Lois a talented illustrator and Lucian a radio presenter.

BB: What do you hope to achieve through the establishment of INC. MGMT?

Kirby: We feel diversity can and should be the norm throughout the fashion and creative industries. We wanted to establish INC.MGMT as a modelling agency that is sustainable and doing something to add to the conversation around inclusivity and demonstrating that it should not be confined to a trend but a part of a much bigger societal shift.

BB: What does diversity mean to INC. MGMT?

Nas: For us diversity means understanding that our models are individuals with unique experiences and acknowledging that these are identities that are not really represented in a big way in mainstream media. It means being acceptance in light of all our differences - seeing yourself represented within fashion and advertising is one big marker of where we are at in society when it comes to acceptance and changing attitudes.

"FOR US DIVERSITY MEANS UNDERSTANDING THAT OUR MODELS ARE INDIVIDUALS WITH UNIQUE EXPERIENCES"

BB: How do you view the current state of the fashion industry, in its current form is it sustainable?

Nas: I think it would only be sustainable if there weren’t people within marginalised communities being proactive and raising awareness to the changes we’d like to see. We want to be apart of these voices to get the creative industries to reflect more than one narrow view of what beauty is.

BB: How do we enact deep, structural change in the industry, rather than hoping a current commitment to diversity isn’t just a trend that will come to pass?

Kirby: By creating a sustainable agency we hope this is one way we can enact permanent change. I think there is a shift in attitudes and we see that a lot more within smaller or upcoming brands and it is about getting bigger brands, platforms and agencies to catch up to what has been bubbling for years.

BB: More broadly, what do you view as the main obstacles to integration in Britain today?

Nas: Britain as we know has had a long history of perpetuating otherness which has been hugely reflected in the media and still exists even today. The conversations around inclusivity are a direct challenge as to who gets to be ‘beautiful’ and represented - which I think some brands feel will compromised their legacy. If we can change attitudes more widely then the media and industry will follow and visa versa.

BB: What are your hopes for 2019 and beyond?

Nas: We hope INC can be a part of a cultural shift when it comes to diversity and inclusion. We also hope to see big brands and legacy brands start to adopt more inclusive practices and less advertising that is culturally insensitive.
