We caught up with the team behind Food & Lycra after attending their Sunday Feast. The event refelcted their ethos, centred around fitness, fun and friends. Their programming was diverse, welcoming and definitely sweat inducing. We were lucky enough to catch up with Rachel and Kim to get to know the team behind F&L, find out how they met and what they're hoping to achieve, the full interview follows below.

BB: Tell us a bit about the team behind Food and Lycra, how did you three meet?

We’re Rachel, Kim and Laura! I (rachel) work in marketing, Kim is a personal trainer, nike trainer and 1Rebel master trainer, and Laura is a chef! We’ve been friends for about 10 years now and met each other through friends. I knew Laura though work, and met Kim through a mutual friend. We then all went on holiday together with our wider group of pals and just clicked.

BB: What is Food and Lycra, what brings your community together?

RT: We started off as a food and fitness platform, mainly talking about our personal fitness journey hoping to inspire other girls to follow in our footsteps - train where we train, eat where we eat! Now, it’s more than that. We still have the platform at its core, and we still inspire girls to move and reap the benefits of fitness but before we were very digitally led.

Now it’s at a point where it’s the physical manifestation of what it was before! We’re doing the groundwork now, bringing the community together through fitness and showing everyone how fun it can be - pressure free zone and no judgement on who you are, what you look like and how strong you are, or are not.

BB: What do you hope to achieve through Food and Lycra?

RT: We want young girls to have more access to sport and fitness and for them to also see it in a new way. Strip away all the nonsense; pressures to look a certain way, or train in a certain way, and make fitness fun again, making moving fun!

BB: How can we make exercising more social?

RT: It is a social affair - it’s the whole reason why F&L got into fitness. We saw it as a social thing to do every week - train together, then eat together after. Good opportunity for us to catch up on the regs, and added bonus of getting fit. If the experience of exercising is fun, you’ll tell your pals to come the next time then it’ll defo be a social thing.

BB: Do you think there’s a gender bias in sports, and the media around sports?

RT: 100%! It’s something we can speak about for a long time, but more for another time! At the moment representation isn’t there, and the language the media uses around female sports and athletes is very different to how we speak about the male counterparts.

BB: For the three of you, is your identity something you’re conscious of/made aware of?

Do you mean what we look like, and where we are from? Being three women of different ethnicities? If so, then yes. We know we stand out a lot in the mix of current influencers and the fitness scene. But this is something we embrace, and we are proud of.

BB: Who is welcome at Food and Lycra?

Absolutely everyone!! It’s a no brainer for us, not even something we think about.

BB: What does Britishness mean to you in the 21st Century?

Being proud of who you are.

BB: What opportunities has Food and Lycra created in your own lives?

Hand on our heart, none of us would be in our current jobs had it not been for F&L. It’s also given us the opportunity to work with incredible brands and meet some incredible women too!

BB: What is it about exercise, food and travel that is so effective at creating a sense of community?

All these elements bring people together! It’s more than just being beneficial for your mind and body, it allows you create new experiences, meet new people and build real life relationships!

BB: What are your hopes for Food and Lycra in 2019 and beyond?

To keep doing what we are doing: make fitness diverse, accessible and fun. Get more people to join us on this movement!
