SEGURIDAD: THE LATEST
RELEASE FROM GAIKA
With it being over 2 years since his last musical output, for many the release of Seguridad is long overdue. Seguridad, is the latest installment from Gaika, an EP recorded on the road, in Mexico City. Taking a hiatus from his tour to intensely record the project Gaika referenced the power the soul of the city had upon him, pulling him into its heart. The project stemmed from an unconscious examination of the Black Atlantic, to better understand his influences and inspiration we caught up with the South London artist for the interview that follows below.

BB: Your latest EP – ‘Seguridad’ comes out on the 3rd July, can you explain a bit about the process behind creating an EP whilst on tour?
G: To be honest we just took a detour to Mexico City and went into the studio and began recording non stop.
There was an intensity to it
BB: Who or what were your biggest sources of inspiration behind ‘Seguridad’?
G:I think the city itself, a sot of centripetal force that pulls you in and discombobulates you.
A lot tof the vocals are like stream of consciousness chants. I wanted to be raw as possible. That came from some unconscious examination of the Black Atlantic
BB: What was the impetus behind ‘Seguridad’ and why release it now?
G:The impetus was to make something that didn’t exist before, and to make music with producers I rated. In a way to refocus back to the unseen and away from established norms.
As the old world seems to crumble and fade this seemed hugely pertinent
“
IT’S SOMETHING AT THE HEART OF THIS RECORD, THE DESIRE TO MAKE SOMETHING USEFUL BEYOND SELF AGGRANDISSMENT.
BB: What are you hoping to achieve through your music?
G: Truthfully its just, communication
BB: What does ‘Britishness’ mean to you in the 21st Century?
G: Absolutely nothing at this point. Ask me next year.
BB: What does home mean to you?
G: The people I care about, community or collectivism I suppose.
This really isn’t limited by geography but is much more about secure relationships and mutual aid. It’s something at the heart of this record, the desire to make something useful beyond self aggrandisement.
BB: What are you hopeful for in the rest of 2020 moving forwards?
G: The end of the apocalypse my friend.
